The Florida Wildflower Foundation (FWF) has awarded the 2022 Seedlings for Schools grant to 30 schools throughout Florida. Schools that are awarded receive an assortment of native wildflower seedlings, gardening guidance and curriculum resources, including the Foundation’s Wild About Wildflowers! Activity Guide. The seedlings will arrive at schools in September 2022.
The recipient schools span 16 counties throughout Florida. To qualify, teachers submitted an application along with photos of their prepared garden site to show that it would be suitable for growing native wildflower seedlings. Volunteers from the schools and communities will support the students in growing successful gardens. Volunteers include parents, local garden club members, master naturalists, master gardeners, horticulturalists, landscapers and volunteers from local environmental organizations, amongst others.
“We are thrilled to familiarize youth with the native biodiversity of Florida,” FWF Program Coordinator Rose Kinane commented. “We hope that learning about ecology while tending to their native wildflower gardens will empower this next generation to feel connected to our natural world.”
The Florida Wildflower Foundation provides these grants with help from the sale of the Florida state wildflower license plate.
